QUADRANGLE 72

Submissions for Q72 "Climate" close Thursday, February 1, 2024 at 11:59 p.m.

THIS IS AN UNDERGRADUATE MAGAZINE OPEN TO THE CANISIUS UNIVERSITY COMMUNITY ONLY.

Please read the Submission instructions below carefully before submitting any work.

ATTENTION: Quadrangle exists to represent the Canisius University creative community. We cannot accept submissions from those who are not Canisius University students, alumni, or faculty. If you are an artist outside of these bounds, we ask that you please refrain from sharing your work with us, as we are limited in the number of submissions we can receive on the Submittable platform. We wish you the best of luck in your endeavors.

WHAT WE TAKE: We accept anything you can put on paper. Send us your candid art: poetry, paintings, collages, short fiction, non-fiction, editorials. Submit your flash fiction, plays, photographs, digital artwork, drawings, printings, and visual creations, traditional and experimental. Submissions are accepted from any student, alumnus, or faculty member of Canisius University.

This year's theme: "Climate"

We welcome submissions that touch on any subject matter, but this year we are especially interested in pieces that grapple with the idea of climate — the world around us and our place in it. Feel free to interpret the theme in both traditional and creative ways: in what ways do the physical spaces around you (nature, your workspace, your home) inform your idea of your environment? How do the people around you and your interactions with them make up the climate of your life? As we shape our lives, and especially as members of a university community that is naturally in a constant state of flux, the climate around us — socially, politically, environmentally, mentally, etc. — has the power to shape our world and our view of it.

"What we see in the world around us is just a reflection of what is inside of us." — Sharon Gannon

SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS

(READ BEFORE SUBMITTING ANYTHING)

Upload your submissions to the appropriate category — PHOTOGRAPHY, FINE ART, PROSE, or POETRY. You can submit to more than one category. If you would like to attach more than one piece in a submission to a category (i.e. submitting three photographs that you would like to be considered), please include all of the submissions of that category as one submission. Read the "IMPORTANT" and "How to submit efficiently" sections below for more information.

NO COVER LETTER IS NECESSARY. Please include the following information in place of a cover letter:

- Name

- Graduation year

- Preferred e-mail address

- Cell phone number (optional)

- For fine art and photography, please see the "Guidelines" section below next to the "Submit" button for additional information that should be included in the "Cover letter" section.

PLEASE MAKE SURE YOUR SUBMISSIONS ARE ANONYMOUS.

- DO NOT INCLUDE YOUR NAME ANYWHERE IN THE SUBMISSION DOCUMENT. (i.e. your name in the header of the Word doc, your signature in the corner of an art piece)

- DO NOT INCLUDE YOUR NAME IN THE FILE'S NAME. (i.e. Sunset_Photo_John_Smith.jpeg, SmithPoem1.pdf, JSart.png)

IMPORTANT: Our Submittable subscription only allows us a finite number of submissions. Please read below to learn how to help us by attaching multiple submission files within a category so that we can accept submissions from all interested participants.

How to submit efficiently

  • For FINE ART: You may attach up to 10 images in one submission. If you are submitting more than 1 fine art, continue to attach each file (up to 10) within this one submission. Then, in the "Title" box, list each fine art's title, in order, separated by semi-colons. Please use the cover letter space to explain the images separately as best as you can including title, year, medium, and dimensions. In order for our staff to give your work the attention it deserves, we  recommend you limit your imagery submissions to 10.
  • For PHOTOGRAPHY: You may attach up to 10 images in one submission. If you are submitting more than 1 photo, continue to attach each file (up to 10) within this one submission (even if you do not consider them a collection). Then, in the "Title" box, list each image's title, in order, separated by semi-colons. Use the cover letter space to explain the images separately as best as you can including title, date, medium, dimensions, location etc. (Please also use the cover letter section to indicate if some belong together and/or are part of a series.) In order for our staff to give your work the attention it deserves, we recommend you limit your imagery submissions to 10.
  • For POETRY: You may attach up to 5 files in one submission. If you are submitting more than 1 poem, continue to attach each file (up to 5) within this one submission. Then, in the "Title" box, list each poem's title, in order, separated by semi-colons. In order for our staff to give your work the attention it deserves, we recommend you limit your poetry submissions to 5 poems.
  • For PROSE: You may attach up to 5 files in one submission. If you are submitting more than 1 prose piece, continue to attach each file (up to 5) within this one submission. Then, in the "Title" box, list each prose piece's title, in order, separated by semi-colons. While there is no page limit, keep in mind that the longest length of prose Quadrangle usually publishes is 10 pages. In order for our staff to give your work the attention it deserves, we recommend you limit your prose submissions to 5 pieces.

To those who have already submitted pieces and are back to submit more (That's awesome — welcome back!), DO NOT withdraw your previous submissions to combine and resubmit them. Please leave them as they are: it is fine and will not affect our review of them at all.

Thank you for assisting us in the submission review process by reading all of the above instructions carefully. Please feel free to email quadmag@canisius.edu with any questions. We look forward to reviewing your submissions!
